The John Report: WWE Survivor Series 2014 Preview

TJR/Melo Man

John: This Sunday night is WWE Survivor Series from St. Louis. It’s a big show in the sense that WWE has been promoting the WWE Network this month for new subscribers by telling them that it’s free. Because of that, they probably expect a bigger audience than normal for this PPV, which might as well be called a Free Per View. Those of us that already have WWE Network are already paying $9.99 monthly for it or whatever the price is where you are. Those in the UK still don’t have it (at least legally), so they’re probably angry about it.

The other noteworthy item about the event is that the WWE Champion Brock Lesnar has been missing in action for two months now. This will be the second straight PPV without a WWE Title match. Due to his absence, the focus has been on the Team Cena vs. Team Authority while everything else has been barely promoted although the Ambrose/Wyatt match isn’t bad as the second biggest match on the show.

You would think that WWE would make this show stacked from top to bottom. Instead, it’s pretty basic with just five matches announced. It’s one of the weakest midcard lineups they’ve ever had. There could be a match or two that are added, so that will help. At least there are strong rumors of a big surprise showing up, but we don’t want to spoil it.

Joining me for the preview are Christian Michael, Andrew Johnson and Justin Seagull of TJRWrestling.com. The match order isn’t the order that we necessarily think will happen on the show. It’s just a format to use for this preview.

Tag Team Titles: Goldust & Stardust vs. The Usos vs. The Miz & Damien Mizdow vs. Los Matadores

Christian: Since this is the Survivor Series and the event is built on survival and elimination matches, why can’t this match be a Fatal 4 Way Elimination Match? Just a pet peeve of mine.

This match is a showcase of how bad the WWE Tag Team Division has gotten. About a year ago it was on fire. Probably the best it’s been since 1999. Now they need Los Matadores to come up with four teams. They need to get some of those teams in NXT up to the main roster to help with the depth. Tag Team wrestling is vastly under-appreciated in my opinion.

As for this match, I’ll go with The Miz and Damien Mizdow because Mizdow is on fire and I think they could have a really entertaining reign with the belts.

Prediction- The Miz and Damien Mizdow become the new WWE Tag Team Champions

Andrew: I’m seriously sick of complaining about how the tag division and/or the secondary titles deserve better. It’s exhausting being this frustrated with something I love so much ALL THE TIME and I seriously don’t have the energy for it anymore. I am out of fucks to give. I don’t care what you do with your midcard anymore, WWE. You’ve broken me.

Good news is that the match will be good-to-great because the Brothers Dust, the Brothers SO, the Maybe Brothers Cow, and MIZ’Z are all multi-talented dudes that know how to take the bag of human shit the WWE gives them and turn it into poop soup. The situation still isn’t good, but it’s easier to swallow.

Winners: Miz & Mizdow (Because I want to see Miz carry both belts while Sandow has to carry two foam replicas.)

Seagull: Hey! Los Matadores are still employed! This is like when they got added for no reason at all to the Wrestlemania four way tag team match while Goldust and Cody Rhodes were stuck in the Battle Royal.

The tag division is…whoo doggy is it bad. It may get a boost when The Ascension gets their call-up, but right now, there are only three real teams in the division and The Mizdow act. Yeesh. I guess I’ll play it safe and say the champs retain but I really couldn’t care less.

Winners: Goldust & Stardust

John: As of right now this isn’t an elimination match although that could change and it should change because one fall to a finish with four teams is dumb. Plus, if it’s elimination style they can probably go 15-20 minutes, which this show probably needs with such a short card. The crowd would care about the match more if it was elimination style. One fall to the finish is confusing with so many guys out there.

The winners will either be the champs or the Miz/Mizdow team. If WWE put it on the Miz team then they would be entertaining just because Mizdow is getting cheered a lot and they can tell the story that Miz is angry at him for getting the attention. That’s a reason to not put the gold on them. If they lose, Miz could blame Mizdow and that could lead to the Sandow face turn.

There’s nothing wrong with Goldust & Stardust as the champs. What I would do is bring up The Ascension on the first Raw of 2015 (build them up with video packages in December), have them beat every team on television leading to a tag title match at the Rumble where they win the tag titles in a quick match that makes them look dominant. From there they can feud with The Usos while Goldust can retire and Cody can go back to being himself after feuding with his brother. Does all of that make sense? I think so.

Winners: Goldust & Stardust

Divas Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Match: Natalya, Alicia Fox, Naomi & Emma vs. Paige, Summer Rae, Layla & Cameron

Christian: I don’t have a problem with a match like this being on the PPV. The Divas deserve to have a spot on the card but let them do something to make people even remotely interested in the match.

Even a backstage cat fight brawl over someone stealing someone’s lipstick would suffice. I’m stressing something. Instead this match is being sent out there to die. It’ll go about seven minutes and it’ll average an elimination every 35 seconds. It won’t be pretty. The girls will be, not the match.

Prediction- Natalya, Alicia Fox, Naomi and Emma. Natalya and Naomi are the survivors

Andrew: I didn’t even know this match was happening until John sent me the email for this review with the match list. That being said, I don’t care about this at all.

Winner: Team Paige because why not

Seagull: A really disturbing trend I’ve noticed lately is that there is now more than one diva segment on Raw and on Pay Per View. How the hell did that happen? Now we have two diva matches on a five-match show.

People who did the free trial for the Network this month and don’t have to pay for Survivor Series should still feel ripped off. When was the last time Emma was on a show that aired on actual television?

Winner: Paige’s Team (Paige is the sole survivor)

John: It’s really bad that WWE had four weeks of television to build matches for this card and they did absolutely nothing to build this match up. It was just announced on television. That was it. Paige is the only one in this match that is regularly featured on TV. Natalya is on TV a bit, but not as much as I’d like.

What they could do is use this match to build Naomi back up as a contender by having her win for her team. Paige doesn’t need a win in a match like this. Naomi could benefit from it. Since I think the other divas match will be a heel victory, I’ll go with the faces here. Don’t be surprised if the crowd is dead for this. I don’t blame them since WWE obviously didn’t care enough to try to tell a story with this match.

Hopefully Cameron doesn’t try to pin anybody’s back. I’ll never forget that especially with the Johnny Awards coming up. Yeah I can do cheap plugs too!

Winners: Natalya & Naomi as the survivors

Divas Title: AJ Lee vs. Nikki Bella

Christian: I’m just bored by WWE Diva’s feuds. The sad thing is the ladies do such a great job in NXT. This match is being done so Nikki can win the title just for Brie to get her big victory in the end. The problem with that is they’ve barely done anything with the “personal assistant” storyline. They’re not giving anyone a reason to care about Brie’s big victory.

Oh, yea AJ Lee is in the match. The rumor is this will be her last night in WWE so she can go play housewife with that dude that used to be a wrestler. Good for her. The fans don’t appreciate her anyway. They all want to be obnoxious and chant her husband’s name when she’s in the ring. To be honest, she hasn’t been interesting since she stopped being the crazy chick that hooked up with everyone.

Prediction- Nikki Bella becomes the new WWE Diva’s Champion.

Andrew: There’s a huge upside to Nikki Bella being the Divas Champion at this point. She’s been killer in the ring, her character work is strong, and she and her sister are the only Divas that have any momentum at this point. AJ is both floundering and seems uninspired. I’m starting to think apathy is an STD.

I never thought we’d reach a day where I think Nikki Fucking Bella was the best Diva on the roster, but here we are. It’s like we’re on Earth-3 where Lex Luthor is a hero and Batman has an owl fetish.

Winner: Nikki Bella

Seagull: Rumors are rampant that AJ is retiring after Survivor Series. There were also rumors that she was pregnant and she was a victim of The Fappening, and those didn’t amount to anything, so I’ll take anything I hear on the ‘net about AJ with a grain of salt. That being said, I’m getting real tired of non-Total Divas holding the belt. Maybe they’ll finally throw them a bone and give Nikki the strap. I’ll wager it happens, but I feel the least secure about this pick.

Winner: Nikki Bella

John: At least this feud has received some TV time. Brie will be in her sister’s corner as punishment for losing to her at the last PPV. They really didn’t do a lot of wacky segments between the sisters, so that’s a good thing. They could either have Brie accidentally cost Nikki the match by not helping her the right way or perhaps Brie will help Nikki win because she’s forced to do it. I actually don’t mind Nikki as a heel. She’s way better at it then when she’s a face.

I was always going to pick Nikki to win just because I think it’s a better storyline with her as the champion and Brie going after her for the title, which would be her redemption in the feud. Hopefully they can end that at Royal Rumble and not all the way to WrestleMania. If AJ keeps it then they really don’t have enough opponents for her to feud with. Plus, AJ had the advantage on television this week so that adds to my belief that Nikki is going to win.

Winner: Nikki Bella

Dean Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt

Christian: I remember watching the end of Hell in a Cell when Bray Wyatt reappeared to cost Dean Ambrose the match vs. Seth Rollins and thinking “wow, I can’t wait to watch RAW to find out why Wyatt did that.” Then there was a whole lot of nothing. Somewhere in that I picked up the Wyatt wanted to help Ambrose because he has daddy issues and that’s why he’s a lunatic. Totally not what I was expecting or hoping for. I guess they weren’t going to come up with anything that was going to suffice. It would’ve been much better if Seth Rollins just beat Ambrose straight up and then Wyatt started with Ambrose the next night on RAW.

This rivalry should be so much more important that it is but to be honest it shouldn’t be happening, not now anyway. These two needed to win their next feuds. Now one of them has to lose and likely lose whatever was special about them. The fans wanted Bray Wyatt to be something special and they fed him to John Cena. They wanted Dean Ambrose to be their guy and then they had him do silly comedy. You have to ask if WWE wants anyone to get over.

I’m leaning towards Wyatt here only because it seems that WWE kills any babyface that isn’t named John Cena. I’d also expect this feud to go another PPV.

Prediction- Bray Wyatt

Andrew: This is the hardest match to predict on the card, and is probably the most interesting. Both Bray Wyatt and Dean Ambrose are the most interesting characters in the WWE and both have a legitimate beef, but not with each other. If I were booking this match I would tell Ambrose and Wyatt to tear the house down anyway they can short of setting the building on fire. Then I would end it with them reaching some sort of understanding, realizing they have more in common than being weirdos, and go take out their anger on the guy they have a real reason to hate; John Cena.

Cena has fucked both of these guys immeasurably in different ways. He saw that Wyatt was getting popular and nerfed his momentum in the spring. At the end of the summer he decided that Ambrose was cool and an easy wagon to hitch to until he didn’t need it anymore and took all the cool stuff when he left. Ambrose and Wyatt should unite and make sure Cena gets fired, then when he shows up as Juan Cena they take him to a night club and pay Jesus to stab him in the stomach.

Winner: Bray Wyatt

Seagull: It’s unclear what exactly they’re fighting about, but who cares! This is easily going to be the most intriguing match on the card. However, I feel like it’ll be the first match in a long series, because that’s how Bray rolls, so I actually expect some sort of shmozz finish, especially on a show they’re giving away for free. Everything leading up to the finish (that everybody is going to hate) will be awesome though. Enjoy it!

Result: No Contest

John: This should be a pretty good match that gets 15-20 minutes. If they had a No Holds Barred or Street Fight type of match it would be a lot of fun just because it fits the style of both men. Ambrose is really liked by the fans although it seems to have tapered off a bit in the past month since he’s not working with Orton or Cena right now. Wyatt has proven he’s belonged all year long.

It’s weird that Wyatt’s in the second biggest match and his two Wyatt Family buddies are in the main event. Poor Bray.

I think everybody should be thinking the same for this match in terms of the result. We know there’s the gimmick heavy TLC PPV next month, so it makes more sense to drag this rivalry out to that show and give them a gimmick match there. In order to get there, they should have either Wyatt win in a cheap manner or do a countout or disqualification finish.

I’m going with the DQ win for Ambrose. It would be something where Wyatt realizes he can’t pin him, so he attacks with a weapon, gets disqualified and takes off. Ambrose wants to keep fighting, so they brawl post match before people break it up. That would lead to a gimmick match at TLC.

Winner: Dean Ambrose by DQ

Survivor Series Elimination Match: Team Cena (John Cena, Dolph Ziggler, Big Show, Erick Rowan & Ryback) vs. Team Authority (Seth Rollins, Kane, Rusev, Mark Henry & Luke Harper)

If Cena’s team wins, The Authority loses power. If The Authority wins, all Team Cena members are fired except Cena according to stipulation announced on Smackdown.

Christian: Let’s state the obvious. Team Cena is winning. If it wasn’t obvious before it’s even more now that the stipulation was added that if Team Cena loses they all will be fired. It’s time for The Authority to move along anyway. They’re just so bland and they make you want to shut off RAW after the first 15 minutes after Triple H delivers his 87 minute promo.

I will give WWE credit for doing a good job in building this match up. WWE is trying to get over the fact that The Authority needs to win this match and that this is a big deal. We all know it isn’t but credit WWE for making it out to be.

I think the interesting thing in this match is how they handle some of the eliminations. You’d figure they would want to protect guys like Rusev, Seth Rollins and Ryback. Ryback shouldn’t be eliminated. The fans are giving WWE a mulligan with Ryback. They’re seemingly behind him again after he was totally butchered in 2012. You know that John Cena isn’t taking a fall in this match, maybe a count out but not a pin. This match sets up for a sole survivor but Cena and Ryback seem likely to be there when it’s all over but I can’t see how Cena isn’t there all alone at the end overcoming the odds for the zillionth time.

This match could go close to an hour and could be really damn good. It’ll make for a very suitable main event and that’s all we can ask for at times but I’ll ask for more. Like a freakin’ PPV main evented for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship but that’s a story for another day.

Prediction- Team Cena wins. John Cena is the sole survivor

Andrew: I was kind of excited about this match until WWE gave away the ending by saying if Cena’s team loses they’re fired. No way do they do another Cena is fired storyline, so bye bye Authority, you were beautiful while you lasted.

Theoretically it makes sense. Cena’s team should feel some consequences for teaming up with this re-skinned Hulkster. After weeks of Cena allowing his teammates to take beatings and lose their belts, they shouldn’t feel any loyalty to him. He doesn’t care if they keep their jobs or not, all he cares about is proving his stupid point that the Authority are meanies and he doesn’t like meanies. It’s childish nonsense, and the worst part is it doesn’t even make sense.

Why would Cena want to team with anyone? The more odds he has to overcome the higher his percentage of winning becomes. Cena beats everyone. Cena beats Obama for President, wins every Nobel Prize, every Olympic medal because Cena wins LOL fuck you LOL fuck you.

Fuck. You.

Winner: John Cena (fuck you)

Seagull: A third of the entire roster (pretty much) is in this match. The big story though is who isn’t in this match, and that’s the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. I mean, we all have to agree at this point that Brock Lesnar’s absence from these shows is a con that far outweighs any potential benefit on him being on the show, right? I sincerely doubt WWE re-ups his deal when it expires at Wrestlemania.

It’s fairly obvious that Cena’s team is going to win, but I do expect the match to be very fun, with each elimination telling its own unique story. This match and the Ambrose/Wyatt match will be worth the price of admission, but can you imagine what it says about the Network if people actually pay money for this show knowing they can get it for free?

Personally, I’ll be at the Giants/Cowboys disaster on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium so I won’t get to see this match live, but I expect it’ll be good. No spoilers, please.

Winners: Team Cena (Cena is the sole survivor)

John: This will probably be one of the longest matches of the year in the 30-45 minute range just because, as I’ve said during this entire preview, they will have a lot of time left on this show. I expect Ziggler to be in the ring for a long time although he’s probably not going to last until the end. There will probably be a big moment when Harper faces off with Rowan, which was teased on TV this past week

There is the possibility of a surprise or two in this match. Randy Orton could appear just because it’s in his hometown of St. Louis and if he showed up to hit a RKO to cost The Authority the match it would help his babyface turn. He’s been filming a new WWE movie since early November, so they may wait to bring him back. Roman Reigns is another name that could possibly return although they might save him until December as well. Sheamus appears to be legit hurt, so it won’t be him.

I’m interested in how Rusev is booked. He hasn’t been pinned or submitted while on the main roster although he has lost by disqualification before. They shouldn’t pin him in this match. Will Cena interact with him or are they saving it? I’m definitely going to keep an eye on those kinds of things. My guess is he’ll lose by DQ or countout while brawling with Big Show or maybe even Rowan.

Some people have mentioned that Triple H isn’t in the match and wondering why that is. I think it’s because they’re going to use him to interfere. Then somebody comes out to prevent him from doing so, which then opens the door for the faces to win. If you know who the rumored surprise is, he’d be the perfect guy for it.

As for the survivors, there’s a very good chance Cena is one of them since he’s always booked strong and that title match against Brock Lesnar is looming soon. I also think Ryback as one of the survivors would be really smart because they are trying to re-establish him as a top face. In order to do that, he needs to look like a badass in this match. His booking will be key. I’m not a huge fan of Ryback, but they really need to make him look like a big star in this match. It would be similar to how Roman Reigns was booked last year when he was the sole survivor for his team.

In the end, I’m going with Cena’s team. The “look strong on TV, lose on PPV” theory is in full effect since The Authority put on a massive beating at the end of Smackdown. They really put the focus on Triple H targeting Ryback, which again makes me think Ryback is going to look really strong here. Don’t be shocked if Triple H is back on TV within a few months although there will be a new GM or matchmaker person soon.

Winners: Team Cena (Cena & Ryback as survivors)

Final Thoughts

John: It’s a one match show with the second match also looking pretty good although it’s not that huge. Hopefully the big name rumored to be at the show does show up because if he does then it will give fans something to look forward to in the months ahead. The product is stale right now. Changing things up will be a welcome sight, that’s for sure.

I’ll be posting my review of Survivor Series on Monday morning or by 12pmET. I’ll be watching the NFL game, so I’ll see the PPV either late Sunday night or early Monday AM. There’s a chance I may watch the PPV live and write it live. Either way, there will be a full recap of everything that happened with the results and analysis of everything on the show.
